Stories, stitches, tears, and repairs
Recurring themes in my work trace the tension between presence and absence across physicaland virtual realms. I am drawn to the ways we sense, navigate, and engage in the world in theera of screens and digital platforms. My research and studio practice unfold through a female lens, utilizing photography, embroidery, and mixed media, all time-intensive processes that require me to slow down, andengage deeply with making.
Each artwork manifests as an act of contemplation and resistanceagainst the speed and spectacle of contemporary life.

The current work emerges after years working as an editorial fashion photographer, creatingimages for women and girls. It spans a significant cultural shift: from the pre-digital era and thedecline of traditional print media to today’s landscape, where we wield increased agency over our recorded identities and visual narratives.

Visible Mending exhibition is a selection of embroidered drawings. Each work meditates onhuman imperfection, temporality, and memory through the repetitive, embodied gesture ofstitching—a practice that evokes the unconscious rhythms of care, loss, and repair.
                  Frances・Melhop

Frances enrolled in the graduate program at a university in 2017, where I serve as director. She hadalready built asuccessful career as a photographer for prominent European fashion magazines.
Although pursuing a master’s degree in fine art marked a new direction in her practice, her artistic visionand interpersonal skills, developed through years of professional experience, allowed her to excel. Herproactiveness and strong work ethic left a deep impression on me.After graduating, Frances turned her attention to curatorial work and founded Melhop Gallery °7077. The gallery departs from conventional models, embracing a nomadic exhibition approach in which eachshow is held in a location thoughtfully chosen to complement the work. Frances has an exceptionaltalent for connecting the historical and symbolic resonance of place with the artwork it houses—asensibility that also deeply informs her own creative practice.

Her work often explores the metaphorical and historical weight of materials and processes—particularlyher use of textiles and thread, which are associated with traditional women’s craft. These materials, combined with the slowed pace of her process, result in delicate, tactile expressions that evoke embodiment and the inevitable, fleeting nature of time.
