My practice explores the multiplicity, interrelation, and modes of being of things, primarily through the use of thread, fabric, and photography
Since coming to Arao, I`ve been in my room, remembering things, thinking, and just spacing out.
Each time, it`s the same thing, but it looks different.
What I used to see, I can`t see anymore.
Maybe there is something that never changes, or maybe not.
And sometimes I just don`t know anymore.
While going through that again and again, I keep stitching.
Morimoto Ryoji
Time, the surrounding environment, and memory are drawn together through photo-printed fabric and needle.
To “pierce time and space,” perhaps that is what it could be called.
Before me was a large, flat work based on photography—on a single piece of fabric, stitched from both sides, where the time of the artistʼs grandmother and his own intersect. And then, another work appeared before my eyes: a book titled Echo.
I was overwhelmed by the layered images. Encounters with such works are what make an art fair so special. Even the simple act of deciding whether to view the book from the left or to open it from the right—a subtle gesture shaped by Eastern and Western cultural difference—becomes a site where the artistʼs spirit charges forward.
Only when one is young can the world be perceived with such unguarded purity.
Morimoto-kun, stay hungry, stay foolish. (Steve Jobs)
